FireKeepers Casino and Hotel would continue to operate under COVID-19 precautions despite an order issued by the state Sunday, Chief Executive Officer Kathy George said in a written statement Nov. 16, 2020.
She said the casino served as critical infrastructure of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi, and would continue to remain open.
'We are confident that the recent significant increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases is not being influenced by FireKeepers’ operators because of the mitigation steps we have taken and which we continue to rigorously enforce,' George said.
- COVID-19: Find the latest news on the outbreak by visiting the coronavirus page.
The state continued to see an increase in COVID-19 cases with more cases reported in November 2020 than May, June, July and August combined.
- COVID-19 in Michigan:Confirmed cases reach 264,576 and 8,049 deaths
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued an epidemic order Nov. 15, ordering the closure of recreational facilities and places of public amusement, including casinos.
FireKeepers Casino was among the several tribal casinos that opened prior to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-at-home order was set to expire on June 1.
Read the entire statement from George:
FireKeepers focus, since our June 1 reopening, is the protection of our guests and our 1800 Team Members. We reopened under strict protocols designed to ensure that FireKeepers’ business operations are not contributing to the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Bingo At Firekeepers Casino
Those protocols included: limiting the number of patrons to no more that 20% of building occupancy; reducing the number of gaming positions to ensure social distancing; prohibiting patrons from gathering either on the gaming floor or at “pinch points” at entrance/exit of venues; temporary elimination of high-contact processes from valet parking to hand dealt poker to bingo and dining in our Mijem Buffet, plus enhanced cleaning protocols, signage and hand sanitization stations; health screening for all patrons and team members; enforcing the wearing of face coverings by all Team Members and patrons; the elimination of all guest smoking in the property; and cooperating with Tribal and County health officials regarding contact tracing.
Firekeepers Casino Bingo Bash
As a critical infrastructure of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi, FireKeepers will, for the time being, continue to operate under these strict protocols, but we will continue to vigilantly review these protocols in cooperation with health officials and the Tribe’s Gaming Regulators to determine if additional controls or actions are needed to support the effort to slow down the spread of this virus.
